about

Koto was initially brought to Japan from China in the 8th century (the Heian period) with the genre called Gagaku, and the current style of playing was established in the 17th century (the Edo period). This piece was written in the late 19th century by Yoshizawa Kengyo (1800-1872) and represents Jiuta style. It consists of 3 parts, and this is the first part with the lyrics from the Kokin Wakashū (Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times) compiled in the 10th century. I thought that this song had a beautiful melody representing the Edo period, and it made me want to add the modern harmonies. - Yukihiro Atsumi
