about

Shakuhachi was brought to Japan from China in the late 7th century to the early 8th century, but the instrument was no longer played by the end of the 10th century. In the 17th century, komuso (mendicant monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism) started to use shakuhachi in Buddhism training. The existence of komuso were recognized by the Edo Shogunate. The pieces passed on by komuso are called “Honkyoku,” and Honshirabe is an essential foundation of Honkyoku. Honkyoku does not have any rhythms, and it is music of breathing. I arranged the piece with a great deal of attention to “the silence.” Each player gives a unique timing, so breathing together with him/her is the key. - Yukihiro Atsumi
